Campaigners in the Deepings say they are encouraged that a petition to save the Deepings Leisure has gathered over 5,000 signatures in just 5 days.

The petition was set up by Cllr Virginia Moran (Ind) on the announcement of proposals by SKDC to permanently close the existing 47 year-old leisure centre even though the Conservative council has not funds for a new leisure centre or even agreed on a location for the project.

Cllr Moran said: "I am delighted but not entirely surprised that so many people in our community have pledged their support for this well-used community facility."

Cllr Ashley Baxter, who represents Market Deeping on both the District and County Council added: "I hope the SKDC Cabinet will recognise the strength of feeling on this issue. The centre has been poorly maintained in recent years because of the promise of a new leisure centre which is not yet even at the planning stage, despite nearly half a million pounds being spent with consultants.

"A modest investment in the existing facility would enable it remain open for the four years that it will take to complete a new centre. If the leisure centre closes then literally thousands of children and adults will be denied access to sport, exercise and entertainment".

The decision over whether or not to close the centre will be taken by Conservative councillors at the SKDC Cabinet meeting on Tuesday 17th August.

Former Council Leader, Matthew Lee, in 2019, promising a new Deepings Leisure Centre.
