A Conservative MP has described the current temporary closure of Deepings Leisure Centre as 'unacceptable' and has said that permanent closure, as has been recommended by Council Officers, would be an 'outrage'.
The Rt Hon. Sir John Hayes MP made the comments in a letter to the Chief Executive of South Kesteven District Council prompted by complaints about the proposed decision by a large number of his constituents.
Sir John's intervention has been welcomed by many of the local campaigners in the Deepings and beyond who are campaigning for the centre to stay open. The comments may not be as popular among MPs colleagues within the Lincolnshire Conservative Party who have been extraordinarily quiet on the issue since it announced last Friday.
Independent Councillor Ashley Baxter, who represents parts of the Deepings at the District and County Council comments: "Although Sir John and I disagree on a variety of political issues, there are many issues, local to the Deepings, where Party Politics should be irrelevant.
"We have agreed during previous campaigns that elected politicians should make decisions and Council officers should follow instructions, not the other way round. I obviously hope that South Kesteven Conservatives will listen to the advice of their senior Party colleague, and of course the concerns of local residents".
Cllr Baxter went on to encourage to encourage residents from across the District to make their views known to their local councillors before the SK Cabinet makes its firm decision next Tuesday.
